Credit card giant Visa enters the crypto space directly
Finally, Visa has filed trademarks for Crypto Wallet and Metaverse.
This suggests the possibility of card companies developing or launching their own digital asset wallets.
It is estimated that there were two trademark applications. One includes trademark filing for software and management of digital, virtual and cryptocurrency transactions. The other is for your wallet.
This is according to records filed with the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) earlier this week.
The documents also hinted that Visa plans to explore the metaverse, named after “a virtual environment in which users may interact for recreational, leisure or entertainment purposes.”
If your application is approved, Visa may also provide software to manage digital transactions and audit cryptocurrencies.
Visa has previously partnered with other companies to offer credit and debit cards linked to cryptocurrency payments.
The trademark application follows Mastercard’s application to the USPTO in April for use of the logo on Metaverse and the NFT.
In October 2021, the company unveiled an NFT program to support the industry before buying “punk” from the CryptoPunk collection.
It is a full-fledged metaverse that does not simply provide financial services in the existing virtual world.
The most recent partnership was with Blockchain.com, which offers crypto debit cards.
Visa is of the opinion that Web3 adoption should grow through growing acceptance worldwide.
Through these partnerships, Visa aims to accelerate the pace at which cryptocurrency adoption can grow.
Visa also has links with investment bank JP Morgan, including a partnership with FTX, an exchange to bring crypto debit cards to 40 countries.
Both organizations will work on a private blockchain to facilitate cross-border transactions.
Last year, Visa partnered with close to 60 popular cryptocurrency companies. These include Coinbase, Binance, and Crypto.com.
This was done to accelerate the card program and accelerate Web3 adoption worldwide.
Last year, Visa CEO Charles Scharf noted that the company could accept Bitcoin if customer demand was sufficient.
This made it even clearer that Visa has plans in place, allowing digital wallets to be on the table.
In addition to Visa, other payment companies such as PayPal and Western Union are also making their way into the blockchain space.
