Five Charged in France With $2.5M Fraud Targeting Bored Ape NFT Owners
The famous online crypto detective “ZachXBT” played a key role in uncovering a fraudulent Bored Ape NFT scheme by French authorities.
Five people have been indicted in France for the fraudulent acquisition of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) worth $2.5 million, primarily from holders of Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) and Mutant Ape Yacht Club (MAYC).
According to a report by Agence France Presse (AFP) posted by Barrons, prosecutors allege that the suspect lured victims through a bogus website that promised to animate NFTs using phishing operations to acquire assets.
Charges imposed on suspects between the ages of 30 and 24 include “including fraud, fraud and concealment of criminal associations committed as a member of a criminal organization.”
The suspects who carried out the plan between late 2021 and early 2022 are based in Paris and the French cities of Caen and Tours.
According to AFP reports, two of the suspects were detained before trial.
The parents of one of the suspects were also arrested, but have been released without charges.
Deputy head of French cybercriminal organization OCLCTIC Christopher Durand said the investigation was initially initiated following a grassroots investigation by popular Twitter user “ZachXBT”.
ZachXBT describes himself as an โon-chain detectiveโ and โa rug-pool survivor who has become a 2D detectiveโ and has built a reputation for investigating crypto and NFT scams with over 300,000 followers.
In a blog post detailing his investigation, ZachXBT reported that Twitter user “Dilly Dilly” had the BAYC NFT stolen after clicking on a link shared by a “verified member of BAYC Discord” and “makes him believe he will be making an animated version of the NFT.” has been
He alleges that the defendants attempted to hide their traces using the now approved Tornado Cash protocol after the first sale of stolen tokens on the NFT marketplace OpenSea.
