A photo has been published on the Internet that clearly shows that the research paper in Science Advances, which reported that the Arctic is a physical space and is directly connected through an ecosystem to a place polluted by humans is true.

The photo, released by the British media Daily Mail, was taken off the coast of the Svalbard Islands in Norway, and it proves that even though it is hundreds of miles away from continental Europe, this place is also not an exception to the garbage dumped by mankind.
“At first, I was very happy to see the beautiful and mysterious environment of the Arctic in person,” said Crea Wallerstein, who participated in the tour. “It was the saddest memory that plastic bottles, cigarette butts, and food packaging that you can only find at home were easily found even in the Arctic,” he added.

A research paper published in the journal ‘Science Advances’ also clearly revealed that the far-off Arctic is also flooded with huge amounts of plastic waste from humans.
In the paper, the study authors wrote, “Most of the ice-free waters of the Arctic Circle are contaminated with plastic waste. Plastic waste is abundant in the Greenland and Barents Seas.”
In addition, the thesis has been concerned with the problem of plastic waste in the ocean since 1997, when Charles Moore was engaged in a trans-Pacific yacht race and his way was blocked by a Pacific garbage island.
The number of such islands of marine plastic litter is only six known today.
According to some estimates, there are currently up to 300,000 tonnes of plastic waste in the Earth’s oceans.”

In addition, the paper said, ‘In the sea, sunlight and plastic are so finely chopped that sea creatures mistake them for seaweed or plankton.
20% of small fish have plastic in their stomachs. In particular, 90% of northern fulmer gulls, which are seabirds that live mainly in the Arctic, contain plastic fragments in their bodies.”

On the other hand, such plastic pollution has a fatal impact on the ecology of polar bears.
In particular, organic pollutants that are not decomposed in nature accumulate in the body of polar bears as they are, causing hormonal disturbances.
According to experts, polar bears are at the top of the food chain that leads to plankton, fish, and seals, so the risk of accumulating organic pollutants in the body is also highest.

인류 쓰레기 종착점은 북극? 플라스틱 뜯어먹는 북극곰 포착

‘북극은 엄연히 물리적 공간이며 인간들이 공해로 더럽히는 곳과 생태계를 통해 직접 연결되어 있다’고 보고한 ‘사이언스 어드밴시즈지의 연구논문이 사실임을 극명하게 보여주는 사진이 인터넷에 공개됐다.

바로 두 마리 아기 북극곰이 검은색 플라스틱 시트를 뜯어먹고 있고 그 옆에는 어미가 조용히 누워 휴식을 취하고 있는 모습의 사진.

영국매체 데일리메일이 공개한 이 사진은 노르웨이 스발바르 제도 해안에서 촬영된 것으로 유럽 대륙과 수백 마일 떨어져 있음에도 이곳 역시 인류가 버린 쓰레기에서 예외적인 공간이 아님을 방증해준 셈이다.
이번 투어에 참가한 크레어 월러스테인은 “처음에는 북극의 아름답고 신비로운 환경을 직접 볼 수 있어 너무나 행복했다”면서 “하지만 곧 인간이 버린 쓰레기가 도처에 널려있다는 사실에 큰 충격을 받았다”고 털어놨다. 그러면서 “집에서나 볼 수 있는 플라스틱병, 담배꽁초, 음식 포장지 등이 북극에서도 쉽게 발견된 점은 가장 슬펐던 기억”이라고 덧붙였다. 　 　

학술지 ‘사이언스 어드밴시즈(Science Advances)’지에 발표된 연구 논문에서도 머나먼 북극에도 인간들이 쏟아내는 엄청난 양의 플라스틱 쓰레기가 흘러든다는 것을 극명하게 드러내 보였다.
논문에서 연구 저자들은 “북극권의 얼음 없는 해상 대부분은 플라스틱 쓰레기로 오염되어 있다. 플라스틱 쓰레기는 그린랜드와 바렌츠 해에서 얼마든지 볼 수 있다”고 적었다.
또 논문은 해양의 플라스틱 쓰레기 문제는 짧게 잡아도 지난 1997년, 찰스 무어가 태평양 횡단 요트 경기를 하다가 태평양 쓰레기 섬에 앞길이 막혔을 때부터 우려를 자아내 왔다.
이런 해양 플라스틱 쓰레기 섬의 수는 오늘날 알려진 것만 6개다.
일각의 추측에 의하면 현재 지구의 바다에는 최대 30만 톤의 플라스틱 쓰레기가 있다고 한다”고 전하고 있다.

아울러 논문은 ‘바다에서 햇빛과 플라스틱은 바다 생물들이 해초나 플랭크톤으로 착각할 만큼 잘게 잘린다.
소형 어류 중 20%가 뱃속에 플라스틱을 지니고 있다. 특히 북극에서 주로 사는 바닷새인 북방 풀머 갈매기 90%는 체내에 플라스틱 조각을 함유하고 있다’고 밝혔다.

한편 이같은 플라스틱 오염은 북극곰의 생태에 치명적인 영향을 미친다.
특히 자연에서 분해되지 않은 유기오염물질은 그대로 북극곰의 체내에 축적돼 호르몬 교란 현상도 일으킨다.
전문가에 따르면 북극곰은 플랑크톤과 생선, 바다표범으로 이어지는 먹이사슬의 최상위권에 있는 만큼, 이같은 유기오염물질의 체내 축적위험 역시 가장 높다.
